Turns out with the five inches of rain that fell for three straight days from Tropical Storm Ida, some it found its way into our bedroom. Dang. I hate dealing with stuff like that. Especially at 10:30 on a Friday night. Andrew left to buy a Shop-Vac (thank goodness for 24 hr stores!) and a fan. He stayed up into the wee morning hours getting as much water out as he could.
In the morning, we made many, many calls to figure out what we should do about it. We were referred to a great carpet restoration service that I would highly recommend to local friends: Keith at Servpro. He was more affordable and personable than any of the other businesses we contacted. He came out on Saturday afternoon (without charging us an arm and a leg!) ran some tests, pulled up our carpet, and hooked us up
After letting those suckers run for a couple of days,
our carpet looks as good as new.
our carpet looks as good as new.
Actually, it might even look better than before. I borrowed a steam cleaner from a friend to remove the anti-mold chemicals Keith had sprayed for us. Now we're wondering what to do with all of the space on that side of the room. It used to be where my DISASTER of a scrapbooking table went. I haven't used it in years, so I'm thinking maybe it's time to get rid of it. Sad, I know. I miss scrapbooking. Hope to go back to it someday when I'm not chasing a toddler around or frantically writing a research paper for a class that I've procrastinated until the last minute.

UGH! Wet carpet. I'm glad you were able to get it fixed up so nice, though. And doesn't your blog count as newfangled scrapbooking?? :-) You really were a scrapbooker extraordinaire, though.
Great! We know who to call if our house ever floods now.
Thanks for the update on tropical storm Ida via the Sweat master bedroom!
Love,

Yes leaking houses suck! Was it your windows or roof? We still need to get ours looked at.
We had similar problems in our last home and could not figure out how the water was getting in. Turned out it was a roof drain that had an interior leak, so we had that drain blocked off and diverted water down through another spout. Worked like a charm.
Did you figure out how the water was getting in? You'd hate to have it happen again. I'm glad everything's better now. Mom told me about the carpet, but I had yet to hear if you were able to clean it.
Ang--That's what I tell myself. My blog IS my scrapbook. And I've also kept up my picture-taking for Project 365. But I MISS paper. It's not quite the same.
Natalie & Amy--Nope. We're still not sure where it came from, either. Taking care of the carpet was problem #1. We definitely want to have someone look around outside, but it didn't seem as urgent.
A wet carpet on the second floor does raise some interesting questions.
What is "Project 365"?
Grandpa--Project 365 is a scrapbooking experiment I've been working on this year. I have taken a picture EVERY DAY and just put them all in big divided sheet protectors with a sentence or two of journaling at the bottom.
That is why I am not a fan of carpet. It's a PAIN to clean. And every time I think that I would like to live in a newer house because it wouldn't have issues (I've always lived in older houses, and the work is constant) I hear stories of them having issues too. I guess that's just part of home ownership (and having the crises happen at night... can't tell you how many of those we've had). But I agree, the carpet looks great now!
