What I love about our house

Now that the drama with the water main is over, I'm ready to share some of the things we LOVE about the house. Here they are, in no particular order.

*We have some cool light fixtures.
Like this one in the kitchen.
I don't know if the picture does it
justice, but you get the idea.

And this one in the breakfast nook.
It feels kind of Roman to me.
Actually, I love the whole nook itself.
And I didn't think I would.
Isn't it cute? I love the vaulted ceiling
and windows on all three walls.

I've never understood the need for a "formal" dining room, but we have one here. This little nook isn't big enough for our dining room table, but it's perfect for this little one, so we usually eat breakfast and lunch here and eat dinner at the big one. Yes, I know the folding chairs are tacky. They're just a temporary solution, I hope. :)

* We have some pretty wood floors, which I've
never had before. It has been an adjustment
for me. I had to put felt pads on the bottom of
all the furniture. And the little are rug still
slips all over the place. Any suggestions?

*The powder room downstairs.
I love this little pedestal sink and
oval mirror in there.

*The screen door in the back.
This was something small that I didn't realize I'd love so much. In the mornings and evenings when it is cool outside, I can just leave that back door open and turn on the ceiling fan and it feels great in here. I love the light that it lets in, too.

Do you see the hot tub in the background? I'm not sure what we think about that yet. Personally, I want to get rid of it. Sell it to a friend or on craig's list. I just don't think of myself as a hot tub person. Andrew wants to give it a try, so I guess we will.

*Yipee--we have a garage!
When they say it's a two-car garage, do they really mean it? We can BARELY fit both Hot Rod and Sally in here. It takes some precision parking from Andrew. I'm sure I will end up dinging up at least one of the cars.

*Behind our back yard, there is a common area
that is great for exploring. The kids and I went
out, but learned that you need mosquito spray,
jeans, and tennis shoes to really enjoy it.
I see some great photo ops back here in the future.

*We are using the 4th bedroom as a bonus room
right now. In addition to having a closet on one
side, it has this CUTE little playroom on the other.
I think it's Whit's favorite part of the house.
It has a light inside, but no A/C, so it will probably
be a better place to play in the spring and fall.

*We have these pretty french doors to the office.
The previous owners left that cool candle
arrangement around the border, which I love, too.

*Our master bedroom is on the second floor, but
then you also have to go up these three little steps.
I think it's so cool. Andrew's not sure what to think.
He feels like he's stepping down out of our
throne room every morning.
(I took this pic during the home inspection, so
that's not our bed or curtains up there. Ours
is still stuffed with boxes.)

*We have tons of storage, which is great. There
are lots of shelves built into the garage, an attic,
and this great little shed in the backyard.
Yes! I can become a pack rat now!

I think we've told most of you, but here's
the picture proof--our backyard is a basketball court.
I think this is the favorite part of the house
for both Andrew and Brandon. Not only can
they shoot hoops on this sweet adjustable rim,
but Brandon loves to ride his scooter and bike
around in the backyard. Whitney's still trying
to get the hang of it. Very fun.

*Finally, I love the brick on the outside. I love
the color and texture to it. Very pretty.

So, there you have it. I'm surprised at how quickly this house has come to feel like our own. Usually when you move, it feels like you're in someone else's house for a couple of weeks. Maybe it was because of the drama with the water main. When you go through traumatic experiences with people, it brings you closer together. Could the same be true with homes?

I feel weird about putting a picture of the whole house on the internet, so if you want to see it, I guess you have to come visit. :) Our phone number stayed the same and I'll try to get an e-mail out with our new mailing address.

I love the pictures! I think the basketball backyard is so cool for you guys. And with the great common area behind your house, you still have lots of trees and greenery around. Everything is so cute!
I also wonder about "two" car garages. We can barely fit our civic and camry in ours, but it's so nice to have a garage. Dave still gets excited about it. (-: I also love the super cute playroom. Have fun decorating and setting up all your furniture. That's my favorite part.

Thanks for the tour. Looks like a really nice home. The high ceilings must really add to the feeling of SPACIOUSNESS.
Snail mail might be a safe way to send a picture of the outside of the house --front and back.
Happy house warming to you all.

Love the photos of your new home; it looks gorgeous. Great basketball court!

I vote for keeping the hot tub. We had one at our last house and miss it quite a lot. It's very therapeutic, helps you sleep better, eases achey muscles, is great for relaxing with the esposo and having nice chats. Just my $.02

So when is the first game of dunkball?

It was so good to chat and catch up last night! Your house looks gorgeous--I can't wait to see it in person!

As for your rug slipping, they have rubber-like stuff that can roll out underneath your rug to keep it in place. It's similar to the material that people sometimes use to line shelves or kitchen/ bathroom drawers. Good luck!! :)

Thanks so much for sharing,

Oh my gosh... I'm just catching up on my blog reading... I didn't know you had that plumbing fiasco! How terrible! Can't wait to see your house...maybe I'll invite myself over once our visitors are gone.

NOW we know why Andrew agreed to this house -- the basketball court:) That's so cool! Your house is beautiful! I'm glad you're moving in and settling in!

As for your rug slippage - I was going to suggest that rubbery/foamy shelf liner stuff, too. Its pretty cheap, too.

I don't know if this will help with your garage or not, but my friend's trick is to hang tennis balls in the garage to touch the windshield when you park - does that make sense? I wonder if you could hang one BETWEEN where your cars are supposed to go with optimal space between them or something? Or pad your car doors? haha:)

Sandy--it's so funny that you mention that because the previous owners did the same thing in this garage. If you click on the picture, you can actually see the little whiffle ball that I aim to hit right on the roof of the van. :)
